Six Tips to Keeping Your Dog Healthy

Updated: Jul 1, 2020

We all want to see our pups healthy, but sometimes with our hectic schedules, we forget some of the fundamental steps in making sure this happens.

If you are a new dog owner or have had a furry friend for years, here are six ways to make sure that your pup stays healthy, strong, and happy.

Exercise

Activity is essential for the health of any dog at any age. Even though different breeds require different levels of activity, all dogs need some movement to ensure that they are kept at a normal weight. If you have a puppy, exercise is particularly important during their physical growth stage and adolescence with their abundance of energy. Try a different variety of exercises with your pup and see how they react. This could mean throwing a ball, going on walks/ jogs, or doggy play groups.

Right food for them

It is essential that your dog is on a diet that is right for their age. If you have a new puppy, they won’t have the same amount or type of food that older, more mature dogs need. If you talk to your vet, they can help you pick out the right brand of food that best fits your dog’s needs within your budget. Also, make sure your furry friend always has fresh, clean water at all times.

Regular grooming

By brushing or combing your pup, you can make sure that their coat is free from debris and snarls that could make their fur matted. Routine brushing also encourages healthier skin for your dog! Aside from the fact that grooming your dog lets you two bond and gets them used to being handled, it gives you a chance to check for injuries or changes on your pooch as well.

Regular vet visits

Going to regular vet visits helps to protect your dog against diseases and parasites that could be potentially life threatening, so it is very important that your dog makes it to their scheduled appointments. If you have any questions or concerns about your dog’s health, you should always have your vet’s contact information. They are the best resource you can have for your dog’s health!

Keep your pet free of parasites

Besides going to routine vet visits to make sure that your dog is healthy and free of parasites, there are also additional steps you can take. This includes watching for signs of illness, giving your pet preventative medications, keeping your yard clean, not letting your dog eat feces and making sure they don’t drink standing water.

Keep up with their dental care

Most pet owners forget about taking care of their dog’s teeth until they get a whiff of a bad breath. Since dogs don’t brush their teeth every day like humans, they are prone to plaque and tartar build-up, which can lead to serious health problems. Some ways to maintain your dog’s dental hygiene include brushing their teeth, using oral rinses, feeding dental treats, or all of the above. You can also talk to your vet about their teeth, as professional cleanings may be necessary from time to time.
