Fall is here—crisp air, colorful leaves, pumpkin spice, and cozy evenings. While autumn is a favorite season for many of us, it also comes with unique safety concerns for our four-legged friends. Here are some important fall safety tips to help keep your dog safe, healthy, and tail-wagging all season long.
🍂 Watch Out for Toxic Plants & Yard Hazards
As the leaves fall, so do acorns and mushrooms. Both can be toxic to dogs if ingested, leading to upset stomachs or more serious health issues. Be mindful on walks and in your backyard, and discourage your pup from snacking on anything they find outside.
🎃 Halloween Hazards
Halloween can be fun for the family but risky for pets:
Candy: Chocolate and sugar-free candies (especially those with xylitol) are toxic to dogs.
Costumes: Make sure any dog costumes fit comfortably and don’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing.
Decor: Keep lit pumpkins and electrical cords out of paw’s reach to avoid burns or chewing accidents.
🍎 Seasonal Foods to Avoid
Fall gatherings often mean delicious treats on the table. Remind guests (and kids) not to share food with the dog. Grapes, raisins, onions, and fatty holiday foods can all be harmful. Stick to pup-safe treats instead!
🌙 Shorter Days = Darker Walks
With fewer daylight hours, you may be walking your dog in the dark more often. Stay safe by using reflective gear, LED collars, or light-up leashes so both you and your pup are visible to cars.
❄️ Cooler Weather Prep
As temps drop, some dogs (especially smaller or short-haired breeds) may need a cozy sweater or jacket for outdoor walks. Always provide fresh water, as hydration is just as important in cooler weather as it is in summer.
🐾 Fall Allergies
Just like humans, dogs can experience seasonal allergies. Watch for symptoms like itching, sneezing, or paw licking. If your pup seems uncomfortable, talk to your vet about options for relief.
Enjoy Fall With Your Pup—Safely
Fall is a wonderful season to enjoy with your dog—whether it’s long walks through crunchy leaves, festive photo ops, or cozy evenings together. By keeping these safety tips in mind, you’ll ensure that your furry friend enjoys everything autumn has to offer while staying healthy and safe.
